5 Things the Sledgehammer Call of Duty game could be
We all know that there has been some drama over at Activision, but, from all that drama we've learnt that the newly formed developer Sledgehammer games will be working on a Call of Duty game, set to be released in 2011. Activision have said that Sledgehammer are working to "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre." However the "action-adventure genre" is very broad when concerning video games. So I thought it would be fun to look at what the future may hold for Call of Duty.
1. Call of Duty: Uncharted
Nolan North is the voice talent behind Uncharted; however, he is also in 500 other games, so why not give him his own Call of Duty? A third-person action game set in modern warfare, but with all the jumping and clever one liners that we all know and love. This may turn the Call of Duty franchise into a less serious game, but lets face facts: If it happened, we'd still play it.
2 Call of Duty: World of Warfare (MMO)
Rumours of a COD MMO were going around recently, just after Modern Warfare 2 was released. And since the MW2 multiplayer had an RPG vibe going on, it wouldn't be too difficult to imagine how it would work. Instead of being assigned to random teams, you have a dedicated faction you join, and fight small battles to try and win the overall war. Upgrades and loot-drops would all still make sense in a Call of Duty MMO. The biggest challenge is getting all the Nascar-watching console fans to join the PC.
MMO's have never had a good turn out on consoles and the subscription model isn't one that seems very popular unless it's on the PC. Battlefield Heroes' model of a free-to-play (with some micro transactions) maybe a option, but that would mean huge balancing issues that would make my brain hurt.
3. Call of Duty: The Mis-adventures of Ghost
Ghost has proven to be a popular character in Modern Warfare 2, for reasons that I can't comprehend. The only reason people like him is because of his sweet balaclava. Ghost also has his own graphic novel that was a prequel to MW2. This would be an interesting direction for the franchise and one that could win back the heart of people that wanted a decent story to be told, rather than a Michael Bay flick.
4. Hero of Duty
One thing we've learnt about Activision is that they will squeeze every penny they can out of a franchise. What do you get when you combine two of the biggest franchises in video games in the last five years? A terrible game, the game could include all songs from war movies and you can play as all your favourite Call of Duty characters: Soap, Price and Jackson. It may happen.
5. Call 4 Dead
Combining the gameplay of the COD games with a 4-player co-op experience while fighting zombies has been done before in Treyarch's World at War. I wish I could have seen the faces of the bosses at Activision when they first realised that this was a hit. The number of spin offs that were running through their mind must have been staggering. As bad as this sounds, I would love to see it happen. The way I see it, we'll know Activision are going to run this franchise to the ground, so they might as well do it while fighting zombies.
